A new snake species named Anguiculus dicaprioi has been discovered in the Western Himalayas. This species is named in honor of actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, recognizing his efforts in wildlife conservation.
Species Classification
Anguiculus dicaprioi is part of the Colubridae family, the largest snake family consisting of 304 genera and 1,938 species, making up almost two-thirds of all snake species globally. The name Anguiculus, meaning ‘small snake’ in Latin, reflects the species’ diminutive size.
Common Names
The proposed common name for this species is the 'Himalayan snake'. The specific name, dicaprioi, serves as a tribute to Leonardo DiCaprio, and another suggested name is 'DiCaprio’s Himalayan snake'. This species has been found in several locations: Chamba, Kullu, Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), Nainital (Uttarakhand), and Chitwan National Park (Nepal).
Physical Characteristics
Anguiculus dicaprioi is noted for its robust skull. Observations show that these snakes bask in the sun and remain motionless when approached, exhibiting no aggressive behavior when captured. The first specimens were collected in June 2020, with additional sightings from July to September, and none outside these months.
Biodiversity Insights
This study highlights the biodiversity of the Western Himalayas. While the eastern Himalayas are known for greater diversity, this research indicates the Western region also hosts unique species. The researchers stress the need for more studies across various taxa using an integrated taxonomic approach to uncover and conserve hidden species.
Conservation Significance
Leonardo DiCaprio’s advocacy for environmental issues adds special significance to the naming of this species. He has raised awareness about climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, contributing funds to conservation projects and research initiatives. The discovery of Anguiculus dicaprioi emphasizes the importance of wildlife conservation and the ongoing need to explore and document the biodiversity of the Himalayas.
